Describe a day in your professional life:

Networking, shooting, editing, repeat!

What are the biggest professional challenges you face on a daily basis?

Wondering where the work is coming from, I constantly worry it might all dry up…

Do you ever have a creative block and if yes how do you deal with it?

I either don’t take a photo for a couple of weeks or a force myself too. However this doesn’t happen to me much, I am not a conceptual artist, I consider myself a photographer though and through, I do not build fantasy through my images, I capture what’s in front of me, therefore I am constantly inspired by my surroundings, people, places, the weather etc, it’s non-stop!

What types of assignments / creative briefs do you get excited about or you are attracted to most?

Fashion a lot of the time, you can really go crazy creatively with fashion, however I also love shooting my brother’s band, I go to almost every gig and see them every day hanging out so they almost ignore my camera now, I feel like I really capture them how they are and it’s fascinating (Band: The Last Dinosaur)

How do you describe your style, Also if you have a central theme of your work how would you describe it?

I think my work tends to be pretty light and airy, there is always an air of freedom, especially with my fashion work. My personal/self portraiture can tend to be darker because I’m in a position where I can capture my mood so the photo can be light or dark depending how i’m feeling. I think the main thing my work displays throughout is where I live, the elements, the fields, the woods, the long grass, the poppies…whatever where I live has to offer. I would have to say that the picture below best sums up my style.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexandracameronphotography/5809098465/in/photostream

What has been the most surprising or most predictable reaction to your work?

Most surprising…the amazing messages and comments I get from people about my work, it makes me smile everyday and I truly appreciate the following I have, they’re wonderful! The most predictable…this industry is anything but predictable!

Could you tell us something about your work process? How do you start? How long do you work on it? What mediums do you work in and which one do you enjoy the most?

It depends what i’m photographing, I shoot fashion/bands/weddings/self portraits/documentary/portraiture/events…you get where i’m going. I think for the most part I have to be drawn to what i’m taking a photo of, if that’s there then the rest falls in to place. My favourite genre would be documentary and fashion, quite a mix so it satisfies my creative interest.

In what way do you use the Internet? What role does the computer play in your work?

A massive part, the social networks are the reason I get any work at all, it allows the world to see what I do, and if anyone likes it, then it’s all down to being able to share it! More than that it allows me to grow, learn from others and be inspired!

What is one of your earliest memories of being creative?

Acting and singing I think, as a child I loved to act, I grew up around creativity so naturally I was drawn to it, acting was something that was very important to me for a long time through my childhood which included putting on endless plays for…well anyone that would watch! My earliest would probably be singing along to the ‘holiday tape’ my dad made which we would listen to on long trips.

What would you have done differently during your career so far and what advice would you offer to others?

I will always advise young photographers to learn with self portraiture or starting a 365 project (a photo a day for 365 days), it allows you to learn and grow and find you style! What would I have done differently, definitely start earlier, I came to it later (20) as I was studying film, I wish i’d have figured out this is what I wanted to do in my early teens.

Would you advise people starting off in your field to continue in education and develop, or go out into the world and learn in the field?

Personally, and this is only personally, I would say go out into the world! I think self taught photographers have more of a personal style and essence in there photography, discovering how to take a photo you like is the best way as apposed to being taught…but that is just my personal preference.

Do you know of any websites links that other creatives like yourself might find useful?

Flickr/Modelmayhem/Deviantart

What other thoughts would you like to share?

Take photos everyday, capture everything in sight and remember it all!

Are you interested in being contacted for freelance work?

Always

Do you have any software training relevant to your field?

I am self taught in all aspects of my photography including lighting and photoshop, however I feel this is a benefit.

Israeli-born illustrator Tomer Hanuka creates incredibly interesting scenes. His stories are told not just by the expressions on his characters’ faces but by the beautiful colors he chooses and the mysterious shadows he casts. His passion for drawing emerged at a young age, when he fell in love with American comic books. He found them “mysterious and majestic, an unreachable light in a faraway land, and more beautiful and exciting than anything around.” His client list includes prestigious newspapers and magazines like Time, The New Yorker, Spin, The New York Times, and Rolling Stone. He has won multiple gold medals from the Society of Illustrators and the Society of Publication designers, and was showcased in Print magazine and American Illustration. For those just starting out, what advice would Hanuka give? He tells us, “if you draw purely for money, you’ll discover soon enough you weren’t paid enough. Illustration is a commercial field, but you have to be invested in the work on some personal level. Make sure this connection stays alive. it’s the easy choice: you’ll enjoy the work AND end up becoming better, i.e making more money in the long run.” View more of Tomer’s work here

How did you get into your field?

When I was younger I always enjoyed taking pictures, and it has recently started to develop into something more. My course has opened me up to new ideas, artists and techniques, and I am constantly learning. It has turned my interest into a passion.

Define how you see the word “creative”?

I see creativity as something entirely individual and original. Something that includes individual flair and influence.

Who inspires you and why?

So many artists have influenced me I wont be able to name them all. To name a few I like Slinkachu, Susan Derges, Ansel Adams, Natasha Nanou, Christopher Griffith, Harold Edgerton and many more. The technicality and concept behind their works is what inspires me the most. I also take a lot of my inspiration from surroundings and people I meet.

What is your favourite piece of work you’ve seen recently?

One of the most inspiring pieces of work I have come across was a picture taken by a photojournalist during a riot in Vancouver. The way he captured the moment has such a strong representation of the divide between love and hate, and the framing of the shot is almost perfect. It really made me think, and it is such a brilliant spur of the moment shot.

Photograph: Rich Lam/Getty Images

What challenges do you face on a daily/weekly basis?

I suppose one of my main challenges would be fitting my photography around my other subjects and work at college.

Do you ever have a creative block and if yes, how do you deal with it?

I find that the best way to deal with creative blocks is just simply look at other artist’s work, it will easily give you fresh new ideas and concepts.

What types of assignments / creative briefs do you get excited about or you are attracted to most?

As I am constantly learning and developing my work, I am interested in a wide range of creative briefs.

Would you advise people starting off in your field to continue in education and develop; or go out into the world and learn in the field?

Being in education myself I would greatly advise people to stay in education and even possibly take a degree in photography at university. But most importantly, get out there and just take pictures.

Are you able to travel around the area for freelance work, also what skills sets can you offer?

I am able to travel, but only around the area. I also have a very strong understanding of Adobe Photoshop and DSLR/SLR cameras.
